Roger William Mercer, born 1932 and at KES 1941-1950, died of pneumonia in Newholme Hospital, Bakewell on 7 December 2013, aged 81.
After school he was articled to a firm of chartered accountants, qualifying in 1956. After National Service in the RAF he returned to the same firm and became a partner in 1964. He practised in Bakewell for many years, since 1976 as the sole practitioner in RW Mercer & Co.
He was Auditor to the Tramway Museum Society, the first to be appointed, and held that office until 1997. He also volunteered in the Operations Dept as Conductor, Driver and Inspector - and I did have the honour of conducting for him, little knowing at the time that it was an all-KES tram! Roger was President of the TMS for the year 1983-84, and two decades earlier was largely responsible for the Society's acquisition of Sheffield tram no 264 when the Sheffield system closed in October 1960.
Roger was very fond of his pipe and had a deep interest in food! A Founder Member of Bakewell Rotary Club in 1977, he was unmarried and at the time of his death had no close relatives.
