KING EDWARD VII SCHOOL
SHEFFIELD

MONDAY, 11th NOVEMBER, 1968
CITY (OVAL) HALL AT 7.15 p.m.
THE SCHOOL SONG
Tempus est ut concinamus, quicquid
Edwardensium,
nunc adestis: hoc sit omnis thema nostri carminis:
qualis est qui cuique nostrum semper aemulandus est?
ille verus Edwardensis, quisquis
humani nihil
a sese alienum putabit, usque consors ceteris
sive gaudebunt secundis seu laborabunt malis.
strenuus labore mentis, corporis
non neglegens,
omnium sententiarum perspicax inquisitor:
semper artium bonarum pervicax videbitur.

(Amahl, the cripple boy, has called the villagers to bring food for the Three
Kings who have stopped for the night at the hovel where he lives with his mother.
They gossip as they hurry up the valley, are afraid to enter, but finally present
their gifts. “Good-nights” are said as dawn approaches.)

All are invited to join in singing verses 1, 2 and 5:—
On many occasions, Mr. Chairman, a predecessor of mine has welcomed to Prize Distribution a distinguished Old Edwardian; and I think that predecessor might properly have been filled both with pride, in view of his privilege, and with a certain confidence, in that he could expect, after due work and study, to ascend to the same pre-eminence as the man he welcomed. But I stand before you in trepidation: the man that I have the honour to welcome, when he was at King Edward’s, was not a boy among boys, nor even Prefect of the boys, but Master among Masters.
Yet why should I tremble? Here is a man whose eminent career is a shining example of all that we understand and admire. As a young man he worked in that Cambridge laboratory where the atom was first split; as author he was the bringer of Heat and Light. Those who neglect to read their Physics, in their earnest pursuit of the round ball, should here take thought: intellectual attainment was matched by our guest’s distinction in the world of sport, for he was a Referee of International renown.
I am reminded of Nestor, that “clear-voiced orator” of Homer’s poem, who “had seen two generations of mortal men pass by in fair Pylos, and now ruled amongst the third:” for our guest ruled as Headmaster over two great schools, and now advises on the progress of a third generation from school to University.
In this age of confused standards, when some worship the Permissive Society and others are so uncertain of sound education that they even suspect the relevance of Merit, we have much need of a “dear-voiced orator”: it is therefore with the greatest pleasure that we welcome you, Arthur Willoughby Barton, Doctor of Philosophy, our sometime Headmaster, and invite you to address the present stewards of your legacy.
