THE SCHOOL SONG
Tempus est ut concinamus, quicquid Edwardensium,
nunc adestis: hoc sit omnis thema nostri carminis:
qualis est qui cuique nostrum semper aemulandus est?
ille verus Edwardensis, quisquis humani nihil
a sese alienum putabit, usque consors ceteris
sive gaudebunt secundis seu laborabunt malis.
strenuus labore mentis, corporis non neglegens,
omnium sententiarum perspicax inquisitor:
semper artium bonarum pervicax videbitur.

As I follow the old tradition of the School, Mr. Chairman, in greeting our Guest, I spurn the gimmicks of my predecessor; I prefer to employ the strains of pure Latinity to sing the praises of the man who has rationalized, and indeed computerized, the progress of all our studies.
We read that Aeneas, seeing
the throng of Souls at the River Styx, asked
“What do the Souls require? Or on what distinction
Do some retire from the water’s edge
But others are allowed to cross the lake?”
Those who in time past sought to enter University were accepted or rejected on just such a random basis of chance as those souls appeared to be selected by Charon; now, as though weighed in the Scales of Zeus, we seek our fortunes from U.C.C.A.: through U.C.C.A. we are judged and chosen to pursue our further education. Tonight we greet the man who holds those Scales.
Our Guest, a true son of this city—for his family were Cutlers— was educated in a school whose name is still respected throughout the land; from here he proceeded to University, thence to most meritorious War Service. After the War he served on the Control Commission in Germany, lectured in the University of Copenhagen, and worked for the British Council Finally restored to University life, he now presides over that system whereby more than one hundred thousand young people annually, on leaving school, seek to continue their studies at University.
It is particularly fitting, Sir, when such pitfalls await the boy who aspires to the highest echelons of study, that we should look forward to your advice. We do not ask, What subject is it most advantageous for us to study? But in as much as we are not without cultured interests, and claim as a School that everything of interest to Man is our concern, we should like to ask you: What studies would best prepare us to serve the nation?
Leslie Ronald Kay, Secretary of the Universities Central Council on Admissions, I have the honour to invite you to address us.
