Of those who control the foreign affairs of this country, the men who usually win the most resounding triumphs, are not those who spend laborious days in travelling, conducting the affairs of embassies or negotiating according to a fixed policy with foreign peoples, but the ministers who merely report the results of such activities to the House of Commons and Press Gallery. Our guest tonight, whom we warmly welcome, has devoted himself for many years to that active life, and without publicity in Parliament or the Press. Born in Sheffield, he showed great acumen in choosing his way of education. For he pursued his studies with credit at this school and he preferred to go to Cambridge. When War broke out he volunteered and after service in the Naval Division, he won by his courage the M.C.
The war over he turned his attention from sea to land affairs and became a diplomatist. If as has been said, it is the fate of diplomatists to see life through embassy windows, in his case how many were the windows and how varied the life. So skilful did he make himself in near-Eastern, middle-Eastern and far-Eastern matters that at different times he has directed from Whitehall the affairs of all these regions. Six years ago he was appointed deputy chief Commissioner in S.E. Asia.
Now after many years of strenuous public life he lives at Battle (Sussex). " In such a town what rest ? " Let us honour him today for the credit he has brought to this school, this city and his country by his life of devoted public service.
Lord, it is time. This
summer gave great yield.
Lay then Thy shadow on the sundials face,
Loose all the gales that chase o'er hedge and field.
These fruits that linger,
bid them fill their shapes,
Give them but two more days of southern weather,
See that they reach perfection, bring together
The last sweet sap that
swells the heavy grapes.
Who still are homeless, will not build anew,
Who still are lovely, so will stay, are going
To spend long hours on writing,
reading, sewing,
And such as they will roam the avenue
With aimless purpose,
whilst the leaves are blowing.
Siesta is over and evening draws on. Now the tropic, sun-scorched shore is cooled. A faint sea-breeze flutters and the Western sky flames crimson. Crabs leave a cryptic wake on the sand. Rosy, gold-glinting shells, periwinkles and shreds of starfish cluster into a crisp carpet over the beach. Venus shines forth in soft majesty and the waves' siren-song re-echoes in my heart.
Against
dim distances a red moon blushes ;
The meadows drowse
where mist uncoils and smokes,
Their outlines blurred ; the bull-frog chorus
croaks,
Stirring the green and quivering beds of rushes.
The water-lily
hides her crown away ;
Stark in the far-off mist,
a spectral host
Of poplars looms, each tree a shadowed ghost ;
Towards
the bushes dancing fireflies stray.
Screech-owls awake and silently prepare
To breast the darkening sky in heavy flight ;
All
heaven is filled with glimmering points of light ;
Pale, Venus shows herself
: the night is here.
Tempus est ut concinamus,
quicquid Edwardensium
nunc adestis : hoc sit omnis
thema nostri carminis
qualis est qui cuique nostrum semper aemulandus est
?
Ille verus Edwardensis, quisquis humani nihil
a sese alienum
putabit, usque consors ceteris
sive gaudebunt secundis seu laborabunt malls.
-
strenuus labore mentis, corporis non neglegens
omnium
sententiarum perspicax inquisitor ;
semper artium bonarum pervicax videbitur.
A. B. Paterson " WALTZING MATILDA " Thomas Wood
1. Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong,
Under the shade
of a coolibah tree ;
And he sang as he watched and
waited till his billy boiled
" You'll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with
me ! "
2. Down came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he stowed
that jumbuck in his tucker-bag
" You'll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with
me ! "
3. Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred,
Up
rode the troopers, One, two three :
" Where's
that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker-bag ?
"You'll come a-waltzing,
Matilda, with me ! "
4. Up jumped the swagman
and sprang into the billabong,
` You'll never take
me alive ", said he.
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
;
" You'll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me ! "
(Swagman : tramp carrying bundle ; billabong : water-hole ; jumbuck : sheep; squatter : sheep-farmer).
Zulu War Song " THE SWAZI WARRIOR " Thomas Wood
Kimalio ! Kimalio ! WAR !
Hold him down, the Swazi Warrior,
Hold him down, the Swazi King.
I kama zeema
zeema Rinktum,
I kama zeema zeema zee.
W. E. Henley " ENGLAND, MY ENGLAND " Vaughan Williams
1. What have
I done for you,
England, my England ?
What is
there I would not do,
England, my own ?
With
your glorious eyes austere,
As the Lord were walking near,
Whispering
terrible things and dear
As the Song on your bugles blown,
England,
England,
Round the world on your bugles blown !
2. When shall the watchful
sun,
England, my England,
Match the Master-work
you've done,
England my own ?
When he shall rejoice again,
Such
a breed of mighty men
As come forward, one to ten,
To the Song on your
bugles blown,
England, England,
Down the years
on your bugles blown ?
3. Ever the faith endures,
England, my England ;
" Take and break us ; we are yours,
England
my own !
Life is good, and joy runs high
Between English earth and sky
;
Death is death, but we shall die
To the Song on your bugles
blown,
England, England,
To the stars on your bugles blown ! "
4.
Mother of Ships whose might,
England, my England,
Is the fierce old
Sea's delight,
England, my own,
Chosen daughter of the Lord,
Spouse-in-chief
of the ancient Sword,
There's the menace of the Word,
In the Song on
your bugles blown.
England, England,
Out of heaven
on your bugles blown.
