The New Year started with the next round of the Sid Butterfield Trophy, the last remaining 16 teams looking to progress to the Quarter Final stage.
A
tall task lay ahead with Premiership opposition laying in wait at OE’s home ground
at Bawtry Road.
After
taking the lead through Mark Jones, OE’s then let the game slip slightly letting
in two goals. Late in the second half OE’s equalised through an own goal. This
took the game in to extra time.
OE’s
then took control of the game adding four more goals through Paul Whitehead, Ian
Nunnington and Mark Jones adding two more for his hat-trick.
A
good all round performance from the team enabled OE’s to progress to the next
round beating Premiership opposition 6 – 2.
OE’s
to play Sheffield Academicals League 2A opposition in the next round.
Ties
to be played 4th Feb at Sheffield University Pitches at Warminster
Road. Kick Off 1.00 pm.
Dunscroft
Vets arrived at Bawtry Road, unbeaten in the League and had yet to drop any points
all season. Dunscroft fielding a number of ex pro’s were looking to extend their
winning form, having beaten OE’s soundly 4 – 0 earlier in the season.
Early
pressure by OE’s brought about some close misses, but it was Dunscroft with the
early breakthrough and by half time led by two goals.
OE’s
came out fighting for the second half and pulled one back immediately through
Mark Jones. Within minutes a penalty was awarded and up stepped Mark Jones, the
spot kick was saved but the rebound was knocked in by Kevin Drury for the equaliser.
Rounding of an outstanding ten minute spell OE’s went in front through Mark Jones
a strongly taken free kick from just outside the box left the keeper struggling.
Dunscroft
showed their pedigree shortly after and equalised to make it 3 – 3. Further pressure
by both sides failed to extend the scoring, with Sean Bennett in the OE’s net
making some fine saves.
It was with some determination that the Old Edwardians arrived at Oughtibridge, their bogey team over the years.
Both sides started with some meaningful attacks, but it was OE’s who surged into a two goal lead through Kevin Drury and a fine header from Pat Hackney, but Oughtibridge fought back and scored twice before half time to finish level at the break.
A strong and determined Oughtibridge side resisted pressure from the visitors, but eventually OE’s forced a breakthrough with a penalty from Kevin Drury. As the game progressed Oughtibridge had little to offer and Kevin Drury scored a third for his hat-trick, whilst Mark Jones added a couple more to make the final score 6 – 2.
